Why the question is a good one
Plenty of website offers look cheap until the second invoice. The monthly price is low, and then there is a setup fee, a fee for photos, a fee for each change and a fee to move to a different plan. A small business owner should be able to know the total before saying yes.
It is not rude to ask. A company that is comfortable with its pricing will answer plainly.
Where extra costs usually hide
- A one-time setup or onboarding fee on top of the monthly price.
- Writing. Some companies expect you to provide every word.
- Photography, or stock photo licenses, if you do not have your own.
- Extra pages beyond the number that comes with the plan.
- Changes after launch, charged one at a time.
- Features such as an online store, a booking system or a second language.
- Third-party tools, such as a booking or ordering app that charges you its own fees.
Examples of how a surprise fee happens
Say a cafe owner signs up for a low monthly price, then learns that the menu photos are extra and each menu update is billed separately. Say a contractor is told the site is free, then finds the hosting and the contact form are sold as add-ons. Or a barber is quoted a build price, and only later hears that fixing the booking button is a separate job.
None of this needs a lie. Each one is an item that nobody listed at the start. That is the whole argument for asking early and asking for it in writing.
Third-party tools are their own bill
If you already use a booking app, a delivery service or a payment tool, that company charges you directly, and that does not change when you have a new website. A good site simply connects to them. Be clear in any quote about which charges come from your website company and which come from the tools you use.
Reading a quote line by line
When a quote arrives, read it the way you would read a contractor's estimate. Is every item named? Are the quantities clear, like the number of pages and the number of monthly changes? Is anything marked as optional or extra? A good quote leaves you able to explain, in one sentence, what you are paying for each month.
What a clear quote looks like
It lists what is included, the number of pages, how many changes you get each month, what is not included, and what would cost extra. It is written down, and you have time to read it. If a quote is vague about any of those, ask until it is not.
The mock-up costs nothing
If you are not sure yet, the safest way to find out is the free homepage mock-up. You see the homepage first, you owe nothing for it, and you can read the quote with a real picture in front of you.
