Privacy policy

Recipe Tin is made by Zossoz, Inc. (“Zossoz,” “we,” “us”). Recipe Tin exists to hold your family’s recipes, so it is built on a simple rule: your tin stays on your device unless you choose otherwise, and it never comes to us.

The short version

• Recipe Tin has no account and no sign-up.
• We operate no servers and collect no personal data.
• Recipes, photos, and voice notes live only on your device — unless you turn on iCloud sync, which keeps them in your own iCloud for your own devices.
• A shopping list you choose to share is visible only to the people you invite, through your iCloud — never through a Zossoz server.
• On-device retyping and suggestions run entirely on your device.
• Import from a Link fetches only the exact page you paste — directly from your device, never through a Zossoz server.
• No ads, no analytics, no tracking, no data sales. Ever.

What Recipe Tin stores, and where

Your recipes, card photos, voice notes, and settings are stored locally on your device, in the app’s own storage. The exceptions are both things you switch on yourself, described below: iCloud sync, and sharing a shopping list. Nothing is ever sent to Zossoz — we have no servers to send anything to.

iCloud sync (optional, off by default)

In Settings you can turn on “Sync My Tin with iCloud.” When it’s on, your recipes, card photos, voice notes, meals, planner, and shopping lists are stored in the private database of your own iCloud account, using Apple’s CloudKit, so your other devices signed in to the same Apple Account (with sync turned on there too) show the same tin. Nobody else can see it, and Zossoz can’t access it — it never passes through a server of ours, because we don’t have one. When sync is off, which is how Recipe Tin starts, none of this leaves your device and Recipe Tin doesn’t contact iCloud. You can turn it off at any time and keep everything on your device, and choose whether to delete the iCloud copy when you do. Photos you sync count toward your iCloud storage. Apple’s handling of iCloud data is covered by Apple’s privacy policy.

Shared shopping lists

You can share a shopping list with family so everyone sees items and check-offs as they happen. When you do, that one list — its name and its items — is stored in your own iCloud account and is visible only to the people you invite through Apple’s sharing sheet. Sharing a list never shares anything else: your recipes, photos, voice notes, meals, planner, and every other list stay visible only to you. Zossoz has no access to a shared list. You can stop sharing, or remove yourself from a list someone shared with you, at any time; the list stays on your device.

Import from a Link

When you paste or share a recipe URL and tap Get Recipe, Recipe Tin fetches only that exact page — and, if it’s a live page, the one photo on it — directly from your device to that site. This request never passes through a Zossoz server; we never see the link, the page, or the image. Nothing else is sent anywhere, and no request is made until you ask for one. If you paste a page’s saved text instead of a live link (“Paste Page Source”), no request is made at all. Sharing a link to Recipe Tin from another app’s share sheet works the same way — the link is only saved on your device until you open the app and choose to import it.

Camera

Recipe Tin asks for camera access to photograph a recipe card. Photos are saved only to the recipe you’re creating or editing.

Microphone

Recipe Tin asks for microphone access to record voice notes about a recipe — the story behind it, in your own words. Audio is captured only while you are actively recording.

Photo library

You can import an existing photo of a recipe card from your library instead of using the camera. Recipe Tin only reads the photo you choose.

On-device intelligence

Optional features — retyping a photographed card, suggesting an ingredient substitution, reconstructing a lost dish, and tasting-adjustment suggestions — run entirely on your device using Apple’s on-device models. Nothing about your recipes is ever transmitted to Zossoz or any third party.

Siri, Shortcuts, and Spotlight

Recipe Tin lets you find a recipe or start Cook Mode by name through Siri, the Shortcuts app, or Spotlight search. This works by indexing your recipes’ searchable text (title, ingredients, story, and so on) on your device only, using Apple’s on-device frameworks. None of it leaves your device.

Purchases

Recipe Tin Cookbook — link and Paprika import, the Apple Intelligence features, and cookbook export — unlocks with a single one-time, non-consumable purchase. Payment is handled entirely by Apple through the App Store; Recipe Tin and Zossoz never see or store your payment details. You can restore a previous purchase at any time from Settings, and the purchase covers your whole family through Family Sharing when it’s turned on.

What we don’t do

• No analytics or tracking SDKs of any kind.
• No advertising, and no data sales — we have nothing to sell.
• No collection of names, emails, contacts, or identifiers. Sharing a list uses Apple’s own sharing sheet; Recipe Tin never reads your contacts.

Children

Recipe Tin is not directed at children under 13 and, consistent with the rest of this policy, collects no personal information from anyone.

Deleting your data

Delete individual items in the app at any time. Deleting the app removes all locally stored data. If you turned on iCloud sync, choose “Turn Off and Delete from iCloud” in Settings to remove the iCloud copy too, or manage it under Settings → [your name] → iCloud on your device. Deleting a shared list you own stops sharing it; everyone you shared it with keeps the copy they already had.

Changes to this policy

If Recipe Tin’s behavior ever changes in a way that affects your privacy, we will update this policy and note the new effective date above before the change ships.
