Why a form works
A lot of people do not want to talk first. They want to describe what they need, in their own time, and hear back. Others are looking at 11 at night, when nobody can pick up. A form takes the request whenever it comes and puts it in your inbox, so you answer when you are free.
For a plumber, a cleaner, a photographer or a tutor, a clear form can be the main way new customers reach you.
What a good quote form asks
Short beats long. Every extra field loses some people. Ask for what you need to reply well.
- Name.
- How to reach them, usually an email.
- What they need, in a few sentences.
- Where the job is, or the neighborhood.
- When they want it done.
How it looks for different businesses
A plumber's form might ask what is wrong and which neighborhood the job is in. A cleaner's might ask for the type of space and how often. A landscaper's might ask for the size of the yard and whether it is a one-time job. A photographer's might ask for the date and kind of event. Each is short, and each lets the owner decide whether and how to reply before any back and forth.
What the page around it should say
People fill in a form when they trust the page. Say what you do and what area you cover. Add your license or insurance details, if you have them and want them shown. Say what happens next, in a promise you can keep, like "We reply by email." Nothing makes a customer hesitate like a form that disappears into a void.
Do I need prices on the site?
Not always. For custom work, a range or a starting price helps people decide whether to ask. If a price depends on the job, say how it works, such as by the hour, by the room or by the project, and explain what changes it. It saves you from answering the same question all day, and it filters out requests that are never going to fit.
Making sure it keeps working
A form that stops sending is worse than no form, because customers think they reached you. That is why the monthly check includes testing your forms. If one breaks, we find it and fix it before the missed requests add up.
Replying quickly
People who ask for a quote often ask several businesses at once. The one that answers first, clearly and kindly, often gets the job. If you can send a short reply the same day, even just to say you got it, that helps. A form is only as good as the answer that follows.
