Photo Metadata Viewer and EXIF Remover

Find out what a photo says about you before you share it: the camera, the date, and often the exact place it was taken. Then download a copy with all of it removed.

Good to know

What a photo can give away

  • Where

GPS coordinates can point to a home, a school or a workplace. Phones store them by default unless Location is switched off for the Camera.

  • When

The exact date and time the shutter was pressed, which can reveal routines and when a place is empty.

  • What with

The camera or phone model, the lens, and sometimes a serial number that ties photos to one device.

On an iPhone? Here is how to stop photos saving your location and remove it from a single photo.

Questions

Common questions

What is EXIF data?
EXIF is information a camera writes into the photo file: the camera model, the date and time, settings such as exposure and ISO, and often GPS coordinates. Phones add it to nearly every photo.
Does removing metadata change how the photo looks?
No. The clean copy keeps the picture data exactly as it was and only leaves out the metadata blocks, so there is no quality loss. A rotation flag is one of the things removed, so a photo taken sideways may show turned in some apps. Rotate it there if that happens.
Do social networks remove location for me?
Many do for public posts, but it varies by app, and email attachments and files sent as documents often keep everything. Checking the file yourself is the sure way.
Why does my iPhone photo show a message about HEIC?
iPhones save photos as HEIC by default, and this page reads JPEG and PNG. The Exif Remover app cleans HEIC photos and videos directly on your iPhone. To use this page, open the photo in Photos, tap Share, then Options, and set Format to Most Compatible to get a JPEG.
