How to Remove Location from Photos on iPhone

Your iPhone saves where each photo was taken inside the file. You can stop it for new photos, and you can strip it from a single photo before you send it.

Stop saving location in new photos

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy & Security, then Location Services.
  3. Scroll to Camera and tap it.
  4. Choose Never.

Photos and videos you take from now on will not carry GPS coordinates. Photos already in your library are not changed.

Remove location from a single photo before sharing

  1. Open the photo in Photos and tap the Share button.
  2. At the top of the share sheet, tap Options.
  3. Switch Location off.
  4. Tap Done, then send the photo as usual with Messages, Mail, AirDrop or another app.

The photo you send has no location. The original in your library keeps it, so nothing is lost. Options may also offer other details to leave out. Switch off what you do not want to share.

Sharing from Messages or another app that has its own photo picker? Photos you attach there can still include location. Check for the Options button in the picker, or share from Photos instead.

Remove it from a photo in your library

Open the photo, tap the info button (or swipe up on the photo), tap Adjust next to the location, and choose No Location. This changes the photo in your library, so use it when you want the location gone for good.

Check the result

To see for yourself, share a photo as a JPEG with Location switched off and open it in the photo metadata viewer. In the share sheet, tap Options and set Format to Most Compatible so the file is a JPEG. If any location is left, the viewer shows it and can make a clean copy.

Questions

Common questions

Does turning off Camera location affect other apps?
No. The setting only covers the Camera app. Maps, weather and other apps keep their own location settings.
Will my old photos lose their location?
No. The setting applies to photos you take afterwards. Photos already in your library keep their location until you remove it from each one.
Does the Location switch in the share sheet change the original photo?
No. It only affects the copy you are sending. The original in your library keeps its location.
How can I check that a photo has no location?
Open the cleaned file in the photo metadata viewer on this site. It reports whether any GPS data is left. It reads JPEG and PNG, so set Format to Most Compatible in the share sheet options first.
