Baseball Darts Rules: How to Play
Baseball is a nine-round scoring game that borrows its name and its innings from the ballpark. Each inning has its own target number, every dart on it scores runs, and the highest total after nine wins.
Setup
Nine innings, nine numbers
Two or more players, three darts each per inning. Inning 1 is aimed at the 1, inning 2 at the 2, and so on up to inning 9 at the 9. Throw a dart at the bull to decide who bats first.
Use a chalkboard with the innings 1 to 9 across the top and a row per player. It looks like a baseball scorecard, and it makes the game easy to follow.
How a turn works
Runs for every hit
- In each inning, every player throws three darts at that inning’s number.
- A single is worth one run, a double two runs and a treble three runs.
- Darts that land anywhere else score nothing.
- The most you can score in one inning is nine runs, three trebles.
- Write the runs in that inning’s column and move on.
For example: in the 5th inning you hit a double 5, a single 5 and miss with the third dart. That is three runs for the inning.
Winning
Most runs after nine
Add up each player’s runs after the 9th inning. The most runs wins. If two players are tied, play extra innings at 10, 11 and so on until someone is ahead after an inning.
A good score for a casual game is in the 20s. Anything over 30 is a night to remember.
Common variants
House rules
- Seventh-inning stretch. In inning 7, a player who misses the 7 with all three darts has their runs halved. Hit it and play on as normal.
- Fewer innings. Six innings for a quick game, or a full 20 for a long evening.
Baseball is played a bit differently in every pub, so check before you throw.
Tips
Scoring more runs
- Take the early innings seriously. The 1 and 18 sit either side of the 20 and are easy to find, so bank the runs.
- The 9 sits next to the 12 and the 14. Be careful with the trebles there, a miss goes into a neighbour.
- Go for the treble if you are behind, a single if you are ahead.
- In the stretch variant, think of the 7 as a must-hit and settle down before throwing it.
For a quicker version, play Shanghai. For something with eliminations, try Killer. Every game is listed on the darts hub.
