The basics
What a darts average means
A 3-dart average is the number of points you score per visit to the board, worked out over all your darts. The 1-dart average is the same figure for a single dart, so it is a third of the size. Scoreboards and commentators almost always quote the 3-dart one.
Only scoring counts toward it. Every dart you throw goes into the total, including misses, darts at doubles that did not land and busted visits. That is why a finish you have to work for, with several missed doubles, costs you more than a quick one.
Where you stand
Averages at pub, county and pro level
Pub players mostly average between 30 and 50. Strong league players reach 60 to 70. Professionals on the tour are usually at 90 or higher. These bands are a guide, since a nervous Tuesday and a good Saturday can sit a long way apart.
| 3-dart average | Level |
|---|---|
| Under 30 | Just starting out |
| 30 to 50 | Pub player |
| 50 to 60 | Good pub or league player |
| 60 to 70 | Strong league or county player |
| 70 to 90 | Top county or semi-pro |
| 90 and up | Pro standard |

Questions
Quick answers
- How do you work out a 3-dart average?
- Divide your total points by the number of darts thrown, then multiply by three. 1000 points in 60 darts is 16.67 per dart, which is a 3-dart average of 50.0.
- What is a good darts average?
- It depends where you play. Most pub players sit between 30 and 50. Around 60 to 70 is strong for a league player, and professionals regularly average 90 and above in matches.
- Do missed darts and busts count?
- Yes. Every dart you throw counts, whether it scores or not. A busted visit counts too, as darts thrown with no points scored, which is why one bust can drag an average down.
- Why is a leg average higher than my match average?
- A leg won in 15 darts from 501 averages 100.2, but you will not win every leg that quickly. Your match average blends the fast legs with the slow ones and the legs you lost, so it lands lower.
- What is a first 9 average?
- It is your average over the first nine darts of a leg, which is three visits. It shows how well you score before the finish starts, without checkout misses pulling the number down. To find it, divide the points scored in those nine darts by three.
