The 2-Minute Phone Test

Your customers find the mistakes on your website and your Google profile before you do, usually standing outside your door with a phone in one hand. Twelve quick checks on your own phone: six basics, then six that most owners never look at. You’ll know what to fix today, what can wait for the week, and what’s worth a second look.

Optional. The checks work without it.

Your business

Use your own phone with Wi-Fi off, in a private browser window, so you see what a stranger sees. Then search your business name the way someone new to the area would.

The basics

About a minute
  1. Your Google profile shows the right hours for today.

  2. The website button on your Google profile opens your own homepage.

  3. From the homepage, your menu is two taps away or less, and it’s text, not a photo of the printed one.

  4. Tapping your phone number dials it.On the homepage and the contact page.

  5. The map opens directions to your front door. Not the middle of the neighborhood.

  6. You can read everything without pinching or zooming.

The ones most owners miss

About a minute
  1. When you search your business name, the blue title in the results shows your name and what you do.Not “Home”, not a website builder’s name.

  2. Text your website link to yourself. The preview shows your name and a good photo. Not a blank box or a stranger’s stock photo.

  3. On cellular, your homepage shows up before you can count to three.

  4. Your browser shows no “Not secure” warning next to your website address.

  5. The year at the bottom of your site is this year, and nothing past is still called “coming up”.

  6. On an iPhone, Apple Maps shows your business with the right hours and phone number too.

Then hand your phone to someone who has never been inside your place. Ask them to find your hours and a way to reach you, and say nothing. Where they hesitate is where a customer would give up.

Want a second pair of eyes anyway?

Ask for a free website teardown. A person reads your whole site on a phone, including the things that are hard to judge on your own, and emails you a short punch list in plain words, usually within a few business days.

Why these twelve

The first six are the moments when someone standing outside your door decides whether to come in or move on. Wrong hours, a website button that goes to the wrong place, a number that won’t dial and a map that points at the wrong spot send a customer to a closed door or a dead end, so those come first.

The second six are the ones most owners miss, because you see your own site every day and a stranger sees it once: a search title that just says “Home”, a link that texts as a blank box, a slow first screen, a security warning, last year in the footer, a business missing from Apple Maps. If you can’t tell on one of them, mark it Not sure and it goes on a list to look at again.
