Retold Help
Answers to the questions people ask most about recording, sharing and keeping their family's stories.
- How do I record my first story?
- Open the This Week tab and tap the large record button under the week's question. Choose who is speaking, hand over the phone, and let them talk for as long as they like. When you stop, Retold turns the recording into text on your phone, and you can fix any word in the transcript before you save it.
- Do I need an account?
- No. There is nothing to sign up for. Your recordings stay on your phone, and in your own iCloud if you have iCloud Backup turned on.
- How many stories can I record for free?
- Retold is free to start. You can record 5 stories from up to 2 storytellers, and after that, starting a new recording needs the one-time Retold Family unlock. A recording you have already started always saves, nothing you have recorded is ever locked, and people who had Retold before the allowance existed keep unlimited recording.
- What does Retold Family include?
- Unlimited recording, The Book (your stories typeset as a memoir PDF), the passphrase-locked safe copy of your archive, printable question cards, story threads, and the optional higher-accuracy transcription downloads. Listening, searching, the weekly question, the widget, plain ZIP export and iCloud backup stay free.
- How can my relatives listen to the stories?
- Open a storyteller under Speakers and tap Share with family. Retold sends an iCloud invitation, and the people you invite can listen and read the transcripts in their own copy of Retold. They cannot edit anything, and they can keep a copy of a story they love. You can stop sharing at any time. Relatives need an iPhone or iPad with Retold installed, and listening costs them nothing.
- How do I back up my recordings?
- Three ways. iCloud Backup keeps a copy in your own iCloud. Export, in Settings or on the Archive screen, builds a ZIP of every recording and photo plus the book PDF. The safe copy is a single passphrase-locked file you save wherever your family keeps important things, with a short letter explaining how to open it. Write the passphrase down somewhere safe, because nobody can recover a forgotten one, including us.
- Which languages does transcription support?
- English plus eleven other languages. Set the language on each storyteller's profile under Speakers and Retold picks the right on-device recognizer for their recordings. Everything is transcribed on your phone.
- How do I restore my purchase on a new phone?
- Open Settings inside Retold and tap Restore Purchases while signed in to the Apple ID you bought with. The unlock comes back within a few seconds.
- How do I contact support?
- Email support@zossoz.com. Tell us your iPhone model, your iOS version and what you were trying to do. A person replies by email.
